Mahavir Singh Phogat, a senior Olympics Coach and amateur wrestler, gained recognition for coaching his daughter, Geeta Phogat, to India’s first Gold Medal in women’s wrestling at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Geeta also qualified as the sole Indian women wrestler for the Olympics. Mr. Phogat’s coaching led Babita Phogat to a Bronze at the 2012 World Wrestling Championships.
These achievements inspired the production of the blockbuster movie ‘Dangal’ by Aamir Khan, depicting Mr. Phogat’s impactful journey in wrestling, elevating the sport’s popularity globally. In 2016, he received the prestigious Dronacharya Award from the Government of India.
Mr. Mahavir Singh Phogat serves as an advisor to Toyam Sports Limited (TSL), consistently expressing his support and appreciation for the company’s initiatives. Particularly commendable is his acknowledgment of Mr. Mohamedali Budhwani’s efforts in promoting MMA sports and establishing platforms like K1L and Kumite 1 Warrior Hunt. These ventures provide significant opportunities for Indian MMA athletes to showcase their skills and talents on a national stage.
Mr. Phogat’s connection with K1L, the prominent Indian MMA promotion, stems from his own experiences. While preparing his youngest daughter, Ritu Phogat, for a career in MMA, he recalls the absence of a substantial MMA platform in India. This void led Ritu to seek opportunities abroad, highlighting the necessity for platforms like K1L to nurture homegrown talent.
Attending TSL’s events and shows, Mr. Phogat is a constant presence, actively encouraging Indian athletes and expressing gratitude to Mr. Budhwani for his unwavering love and support towards MMA athletes in India. His involvement signifies not just professional collaboration but a shared commitment to fostering the growth and recognition of MMA sports in the country.
